Alvin Youngblood Hart was born in Oakland, California on 2 March 1963. He draws his inspiration ancestral home in Carrollton, Mississippi. Hart won acclaim with his 1996 debut "Big Mama's Door" (OKeh) and that was further enhanced with the 1998 "Territory" (Hannibal HNCD 1431). Alvin lives in Mississippi where he runs with his wife a guitar repair shop.
"Start With The Soul" was recorded at Sounds Unreel Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis legend Jim Dickinson produced it. The musicians are bass players: Larry Fulcher and Bill MacBeth; drummers; Frosty Smith and Daren Dortin; keyboardist: East Memphis Slim; backing vocalists: Susan Marshall and Jackie Johnson and a brass section of Scott Thompson (trumpet) and Jim Spake (sax).
Alvin Youngblood Hart has shifted direction with "Start With The Soul". It's a real get down and dirty band sound, it's still the Blues but there is also some serious rockin' going on as well. Seven of the tracks are originals. They are "Fightin' Hard", "Manos Arriba", "Once Again", a funky instrumental "Porch Monkeys' Theme", "Electric Eel", another instrumental "Maxwell Street Jimmy" and "A Prophet's Mission". Other gems include Chuck Berry's "Back To Memphis", "The Hustler" and the rocky Black Oak Arkansas' "Cryin' Shame". Great stuff.
