The North Mississippi Allstars are the real thing. The Allstars are brothers Luther (electric and slide guitars & vocals) and Cody Dickinson (drums & vocals) and Chris Chew (bass & vocals). Luther and Cody are the sons of legendary Memphis musician and producer Jim Dickinson. The North Mississippi Allstars draw their sound from the hill county of North Mississippi where they grew up and are heavily influenced by the likes of R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, fife and drum legend Otha Turner and Mississippi Fred McDowell.
"Shake Hands With Shorty" was recorded during 1999 at Zebra Ranch Studios in Tate County, Mississippi. Luther and Cody produced it. Garry (bass) and Cedric Burnside (drums) turn up on R.L. Burnside's "Goin' Down South" and a magnificent jam of the late Junior Kimbrough's "All Night Long". The other great tracks are Burnside's "Po Black Maddie", "Station Blues", "K.C. Jones (On The Road Again)" and four McDowell tunes "Shake `Em On Down", "Drinking Muddy Water", "Someday Baby" and "Drop Down Mama". Alvin Youngblood Hart solos on the latter. Other guests include Otha Turner (cane fife), East Memphis Slim (piano) and the Tate County Singers.
The North Mississippi Allstars are awesome. These guys have taken the trance and drone sound of a Fat Possum release and refined it with tight and precise playing and a polished production. "Shake Hands With Shorty" is a must in any collection. World domination is coming.
