****
Dr Feelgood are known to almost everyone. They formed in 1971 and based themselves in Canvey Island, Essex on the Thames estuary in England. They lost their frontman Lee Brilleaux to lymphoma in 1994. With new singer and harpist Pete Cage in tow, Dr Feelgood got on with the job and released "On The Road Again" (Grand 19) in 1996. The rest of The Doctors are Phil Mitchell (bass), Kevin Morris (drums & b. vocals) and Steve Walwyn (guitars & b. vocals).
"Chess Masters" was recorded, with that same line up, at Mushroom and Roundel Studios in England. The Doctors and Dave Bronze produced it. This new 2000 release is a reminder of just how important Philip and Leonard Chess and of course Willie Dixon were to the Blues. Guests include Roger Cotton (Hammond), Ian Gibbons (piano & organ), Rick Wakeman (piano) and a horn section of Frank Mead (sax & harp), Nick Payne (sax & harp) and Darren Lloyd (trumpet).
All of the songs on "Chess Masters" are what we have come to expect from Dr Feelgood. The CD kicks off with "Nadine" and finishes with "Hoochie Coochie Man". In between there is "You Gotta Help Me", "Send For The Doctor", Willie Dixon's "29 Ways", "Don't Start me Talking", "The Walk" and J.B. Lenoir's "Gimmie One More Shot". Great stuff.
