FIONA BOYES
BLUES IN MY HEART
(Black Market Music)
Back in the early 90's I caught The Mojos playing at a Blues Festival on the Sunshine Coast and was lucky enough to witness an acoustic set with Fiona Boyes and Kaz Dalla Rosa as the Hokum Gals. Now years later, and after The Mojos have established themselves as one of the countries finest blues bands, guitarist and vocalist Fiona Boyes has released her debut solo acoustic blues album, Blues In My Heart.
The album was produced and co-produced by John Durr (owner of Black Market Music) & Fiona Boyes respectively and was recorded live in the studio over two days in September. Featuring sixteen tracks with ten originals from Fiona, that showcase her exceptional talent as a songwriter and solo performer. Songs like She Could Play That Thing (Blues For Memphis Minnie) is in part a tribute to Minnie, but she is also singing about herself as she also does on, I Let The Blues In that features Kaz Dalla Rosa playing some cool harp fills and other members of The Mojos, Gina Woods-piano and Paula Dowse-percussion. Another track that has her band members on it is a great uptempo instrumental called Hokum Rag. Fiona has included a number of covers like Leadbelly's Pig Meat, J. B. Lenoir's Mercy (Mississippi Road), and my favourite track on the album, is a funky version of Tommy Johnson's Canned Heat. Fiona's vocals and guitat picking on the whole album are just superb.
I feel that Blues In My Heart is an album that's on a par with any of the albums that have been put out by the top country blueswomen in the U.S. if not better! World class!!
