Ross Williams, who usually performs and records with Doc Span has branched out and recorded his first solo album Swamprat Calling. As Ross puts it, the album is a collection of ragtime, blues and swamp tunes for solo acoustic guitar. These tunes could loosely be described as the genre of blues from the east coast of the U.S. widely known today as Piedmont blues.
Swamprat Calling…has ten instrumental tracks featuring Ross' superb fingerpicking and fret work. The songs include traditional country blues numbers like Mississippi Blues and W.C. Handy's Saint Louis Blues both of which were arranged by Ross, to his own original songs, What A Way To Go (The Rowing Song), One Moment With You, and Taylor's Rag that he wrote for his son. Two more songs on the album are Tommy Emmanuel's The Syngogue Rag and Kirk Lorange's Summer's End. All of these songs somehow fit nicely together which leads me to believe it's not so much the song, but it's Ross' guitar playing that brings them all together. This is another great album to add to your country blues collection.
