For those who don't know it, Australia has it's own `Koko Taylor' known as Kate `The Blues Lady' Meehan. Hailing from the Apple Isle, Kate has recently released her new CD As Long As I've Sung The Blues. This is a follow-up to 98's successful debut Let The Good Times Roll which was a runner-up in the VicTas Blues Awards.
As Long As I've Sung The Blues was recorded live in the studio at A#Sharp Studios in Sydney and produced by award winning producer Jeff Cripps, who plays drums on the album as well as some wicked slide guitar on the final cut written by Kate, It Ain't Like It Is. Jeff also contributed the song I Wish You The Best. The other musicians include Illya Szwec-guitar, Michael Lynch-bass guitar, Don Hopkins-keyboard and vocals on the song he wrote, Lets Go Back, Steve O'Connell-saxaphone, Australian blues legend Ron King on harmonica, and of course Kate Meehan who has the best blues vocals in the country.
The album features twelve quality tracks with five of them coming from the pen of Kate. Songs that swing like Money Hungy Man and Pocket Full Of Blues to Chicago style blues in Leave The Past Behind and the title track As Long As I've Sung The Blues with Illya Szwec playing some dirty solos on both tracks. The whole album is excellent, but the heart and soul are Kate's original songs, powerful vocals and the professionalism of all the musicians who play on it. This is one album that should be in everyone's blues collection. Buy it and support Australian blues.
