Vic Mally - "Raw Blues"
(Full House Records FHR-001)
10 tracks, 40 mins 59 secs.
***½
Guitarist Vic Mally has been listening to the blues for over thirty-five years. His favourite sound is the straight-ahead 12 bar gut wrenching boogie. When I first heard "Raw Blues" it reminded of what I like to hear after a heavy week at work. The sound of a three-piece band, when you first put you head in through the door of a club or pub. That bare bones sound like early Canned Heat.
The self produced "Raw Blues" was recorded during June & July 2000 at Mainstreet recording Studios in Corrimal, NSW. The rest of this Aussie line up is Michael Ferguson (lead, rhythm, bass & vocals) and "Telephone" Mick Ridgway (drums). Five of the tunes were written by Ferguson of which three were co-written by Vic Mally. Vic's guitar sound is simular in some ways to that of Canned Heat's late guitarist Henry Vestine.
The CD starts with "Raw Blues" and finishes with more "Raw Blues Reprise". In-between there are originals like "Hello Blues", "Swinging At Midnight" and "I Wanna Howl" and covers like "The Hunter", John Lee Hooker's "Maudie", Freddie King's "Washout" and Houndog Taylor's "She's Gone". Grab a copy of "Raw Blues" and get down and boogie baby.
