"MEAN" GENE KELTON
MOST REQUESTED
Avatar Records
In Mississippi, blues was a way of life and that's how it was for "Mean" Gene Kelton growing up in the 50s and 60s. As a kid he would sneak into juke joints or listen to the old bluesmen singing on street corners, so it was only natural that he too would play the blues. He now calls Houston, Texas his home and has spent over twenty years playing his guitar and the blues in biker bars and roadhouses making him a bona-fide Texas Bluesman.
"Mean" Gene Kelton's new CD Most Requested features fifteen of the most requested songs he plays at his live shows with his band The Die Hards. All the songs on the album were penned by Kelton that range from southern fried blues to americana and hard core blues rock. Some of the songs include Too White To Play The Blues which he wrote in 1990 and says it use to really piss him off when someone in the crowd would say white boys can't play the blues. Tears On My Guitar is about a woman who broke his heart and he really makes his guitar weep with some wicked playing on this track. Cruisin' Texas Avenue has a sort of rootsy americana and dare I say John Mellencamp feel to it, but none the less it's a great song. My favorite track on the album is the witty My Baby Don't Wear No Panties. This song came about when Gene was playing at a bar and a biker chick was dancing on a table when her ol' man yelled out my baby don't wear no panties. So he wrote a song about it and as it turns out this is their #1 blues song. "Mean" Gene is joined on this album by his two sons Jamie-bass and Sid-drums who play on twelve of the fifteen tracks.
Most Requested is a top notch Texas blues album with heaps of scorching guitar playing and can be heard at http://www.mp3.com/genekelton highly recommended.
