ERIC CLAPTON
REPTILE
(Reprise)
Eric Clapton may have begun his career as a blues man but he's certainly covered some turf since then. Reptile illustrates that tortuous journey. The material ranges from the jazz-flavoured opener and title track Reptile to the out-and-out blues of Got You On My Mind. Also look out for covers of Ray Charles, James Taylor, JJ Cale and Stevie Wonder songs. Clapton wrote five of the 15 tracks showcasing his considerable songwriting talent. What ties the album together is the sheer quality and emotiveness of the performances. Of course Eric's guitar playing is sublime but his vocal performances are also noteworthy; just listen to the vocal dynamics in Ray Charles' Come Back Baby.
Eric also produced the album along with Simon Climie. Unlike a lot of self-produced albums, Reptile hangs together well without the self-indulgence that characterises many such projects. This album is around 70 minutes long and is a satisfying addition to Eric's extensive catalogue. Rush out and buy it!
