EARLE DOUGLAS
WHILE OUT IN CALIFORNIA
Independent
Over the last couple of years Earle Douglas aka Doug Siggs has been turning up consistently on the last Wednesday of the month at the BASEQ jam with a telecaster in one hand and a brass slide in the other. Anyone who has seen him play will know he is a very talented slide guitarist. Well now you can hear him play in the comfort of your own home as he has just released his debut independent album, While Out In California.
The name of the album comes from his time spent in California and the songs are about his experiences in the U.S. which he wrote about when he returned to Australia. While Out In California features twelve original songs about the thing that all bluesmen write about, women and love gone wrong. The songs are very strong and well written and fall into the electric blues and country blues category. Earle is backed up on the album by Billy John Bakos-drums, Sammy Mack-bass both from Buzz and the Blues Band. Guest artists include Mojo Webb-harmonica on three songs, and another BASEQ jam stalwart Tim Palmer-acoustic guitar on two songs.
Earle's vocals are excellent, but his slide playing will blow you away. I can't say that Earle sounds like any one particular artist as he's probably been influenced by every slide guitarist who has ever lived, but there's definitely a Ry Cooder infulence in his playing on the opening track. The best thing to do is judge for yourself and buy the CD or sample some of the songs at his website. Keep on slidin'!
