Marcia Ball
Presumed Innocent
(Alligator Records ALCD.4879) Shock
Legendary Texan singer and pianist Marcia Ball was born in Orange, Texas on 20 March 1949. She was born into a music family and took piano lessons as a child. Marcia Ball has played a number of styles but was particularly influenced by Dr. John, Professor Longhair and Fats Domino. Recent releases include the 1997 "Let Me Play With Your Poodle" (Rounder 3151) and the 1998 "Sing It" (Rounder 2152). The latter was recorded with another two divas of the Blues: Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson.
Doyle Bramhall, Sr. and Marcia Ball produced "Presumed Innocent". It was recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin. The all-star line up of musicians includes harp player: Gary Primach; Hammond B-3 man: Riley Osbourn; guitarists: Pat Boyack, Derek O'Brien, Sonny Landreth and C.C. Adcock; drummers: Chris Hunter, Keith Robinson and Doyle Bramhall; bassists: Roscoe Beck and Don Bennett; and brass players: Wayne Jackson, Pat Breaux and Mark Kazanoff.
Marcia Ball penned five of the tracks including "She's So Innocent", "You Make Me Happy" and the Stephen Burton co written tune, "The Scene Of The Crime". Other tunes are "Fly On The Wall", "Count The Days", "I Have The Right To Know", a New Orleans rocker "Thibodaux, Louisiana" and a duet with Delbert McClinton, the brilliant "You Make It Hard". "Presumed Innocent" is more of what we have come to expect from Marcia Ball. It's a classic.
