Chrome Daddies
Chrome Daddies
Preston Records
In the short time since this Bris band were birthed onto the scene, the Chrome Daddies have amassed a considerable following, an enviable reputation for boogie and beat, and stellar appearances at some of this town's biggest festivals including the Summertime Blues Festival and the recent Greaze Fest.
The Chrome Daddies star Doug Wilshire (vocals, steel guitar and banjo - just forget Deliverance), Jon Flynn (vocals, upright bass), Stuart Docherty (guitar, slide guitar) and the singing drummer, Geoff Townsley.
I love this album to bits, from the opening riffs of 8 Ball to the ultimate notes of Stuart's Boogie! Live the Chrome Daddies play an intoxicating mix of rockabiilly, country, western swing, swing and blues, however this album doesn't reflect the full scope of their live repertoire, instead focusing more on the rockabilly end of the scale due to label restraints. Hey but that's OK, what's here is tasty indeed!
The album was recorded in three track mono at Preston Studios in Melbourne which is the only studio in the country still using old valve equipment. The resultant sound is vintage and totally authentic.
Of the 16 tracks, only two are covers all but one of the rest penned by Doug Wilshire. Stuart Docherty gets to finish the album with Stauart's Boogie. The material is very groovy and the album lacks nothing for its inclusion.
I'm tempted to go on and on about this album however space restraints prevent me from doing so. Let me just say the performances are consummate, the songs are first rate and this is an album you need to buy.
