DAVID GOGO
HALFWAY TO MEMPHIS
Cordova Bay Records
Voted Musician of the Year 1999/2000 at the West Coast Music Awards in Canada, David Gogo blew Stevie Ray Vaughan away with his guitar playing in the 1980s when he was just sixteen. Stevie encourage David to pursue his dreams of becoming a serious blues guitarist/vocalist. He was soon making a name for himself in a band called The Persuaders opening up for Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter across Western Canada and supporting the Fabulous Thunderbirds on a european tour
Halfway To Memphis is David's fourth album in the last three years. It's a mix of original songs and some well known covers from the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Willie Dixon. David sets the tone for the album opening up with Muddy's Louisiana Blues played to the max with stinging solos and full throttle slide. The volume comes down a little by the time you reach the third track, a really cool cover of Willie Nelson's Nightlife. Three Gogo originals follow, Bad Faces, Soul Fever and the title track Halfway To Memphis. As well as writing excellent songs and being a great guitarist, his vocals are very believable and right on the money. The album has eleven tracks all up with about 57 minutes of playing time and finishes with the 10 minute Blues Medley consisting of Commit A Crime, Smokestack Lightnin', It Serves Me Right To Suffer, Boom Boom and Wang Dang Doodle.
If you like your blues played hard and fast with heaps of slide then Halfway To Memphis is for you. Best played at maximum volume!
