Big Bill Morganfield
Rising Son
(Blind Pig) Blackmarket Music
Big Bill Morganfield is the son of the legendary Muddy Waters. He was born in Chicago's Cook County Hospital on 19 June, 1956. Bill's mother was Mary Brown, a nineteen year old Muddy had met around 1955. Big Bill was raised by his grandmother in Florida and felt the music calling him after his father had died. He was signed to Blind Pig Records and recorded Rising Son in 1998.
Rising Son was recorded at Studio Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. It was produced by Bob Margolin. Except for Chicago's premier electric bass player, Robert Stroger, all of the musicians on this release played with Muddy. They are Margolin (guitar), Pinetop Perkins (piano), Paul Oscher (harmonica) and Willie Smith (drums).
Five of the tunes are penned by Bill. Those are Dead Ass Broke, Cryin' Days, Don't Want To See You Go, Left Hand Blues and the title track. On the latter two songs Big Bill plays some eerie slide that sounds just like Muddy. Other tracks include I Just Keep Lovin' Her', Willie Dixon's The Same Thing, Sloppy Drunk, Howlin' Wolf's Baby How Long and a couple of Muddy's tunes - Screamin' And Cryin' and Champagne And Reefe'.
The length of the disc is a bit short otherwise a great release. A must.
