Dr John
Duke Elegant
EMI
True enough this album may be more jazz than blues but it boasts such a gorgeous collection of songs, I just had to take a look at it. On Duke Elegant, the charismatic and intriguing character of Dr John, interprets the music of jazz pianist Duke Ellington. Of course Dr John does them in his own mysterious way, with lots of hoodoo charm and funky groove. His distinctive voice and consummate playing lends the songs a mood I'm sure Ellington never envisaged.
Though the album contains a few lesser known tracks, thankfully some of Ellington's classics are included such as Don't Get Around Much Anymore and Mood Indigo. Though every song is a winner, I enjoyed the slow moody vibe of Solitude and Do Nothin' `Til You Hear From Me. Flaming Sword was also a particular favourite. The album comes in at just over an hour and I'm confident any fan of Dr John or Duke Ellington is sure to enjoy it.
