Jan Preston
My Room of Pianos
Black Market Music
I first saw Jan Preston at the National Country Music Muster at Gympie last year with harp player Jim Conway (The Backsliders) and was blown away by the intimacy and dynamics of her fabulous performance. This recording captures all of that bittersweet emotion - all of the angst, frustration and ultimately the optimism and humour inherent in being a single woman and mother in the new millennium. The album is the follow-up to Jan's 1997 release Back Door Woman.
My Room of Pianos features Jan's gorgeous boogie piano and evocative vocals together with the plaintive harp of Jim Conway and the sparse percussion of Paula Dowse (The Mojos). All but two of the songs are original. From the melancholy, jazz feels of Pain in my Heart to the wicked raunch of To Feel You, this album takes you on an irresistible and very personal journey. Jan's lyrics are delightful.
Featuring 14 tracks, My Room of Pianos comes in at around 50 minutes. I enjoyed it immensely and hope that you all rush out and buy it!
