(Delmark)
www.delmark.com
Singer and guitarist Jimmy Johnson was born James Thompson in Holly Springs, Mississippi on 25 November 1928. He moved to Chicago and has two blues playing brothers in Syl Johnson and Mac Thompson (a.k.a. Mac Johnson). Jimmy Johnson has been involved in both the Soul and Blues scene and his songs are gospel tinged. Another album of interest is the 1979 `Johnson's Whacks' (644).
All of the songs on `North // South' were penned by Jimmy Johnson. They were recorded at Solid Sound Studios and Zenith/db Studios over three sessions: 11 August 1981, 27 January 1982 and 10 February 1982. Steve Tomashefsky, Jimmy and his band produced the sessions. The guys were Carl P. Snyder (piano & organ), Larry Exum (bass) and Ike Davis (drums). The guests were Professor Eddie Lusk (organ) and guitarists Larry Burton and Criss Johnson. Some of the great tunes are `Talking `Bout Chicago', `Country Preacher', `I Can't Survive', `A Woman Ain't Supposed To Be Hard', `Can't Go No Further' and `Walking On Thin Ice'.
