Geoff Achison & The Souldiggers
Live at St. Andrews
Jupiter II Records
Geoff Achison is probably one of the most exciting guitar players in Australia, and if you've ever seen him perform live, electric or acoustic you'll know what I mean. I first saw Geoff back in '91 at the second East Coast Blues Festival when he was with Dutch Tilders and have been a fan ever since. Geoff's latest release, Live At St. Andrews is one that everyone will want to take home whether you have seen him live or not.
The title says it all, it was recorded live at the St. Andrews Hotel in Victoria on the 29th February, 2000 by Rob Harwood, actually Rob has been recording Geoff's gigs there for quite some time and new he something special on this one. Joining Geoff are The Souldiggers, Roger McLachlan - Bass, Kevin Murphy - Drums, and Mal Logan - Piano and Organ.
With around 67 mins. of music and only nine tracks, you know straight away that you're in for more than a few long tracks. Five of them are 9 mins. or longer. Geoff and The Souldiggers open the set up with their theme song Souldigger, an autobiography more about Achison than the band, but a great track anyway. The guys really get a workout on Natch'l Fax with Geoff attacking his strings an Mal Logan cutting loose on piano. Seven of the nine tracks presented here are penned by Achison with only two covers, Deadric Malone's As The Years Go Passing By and Don Nix's Same Old Blues. With straight ahead blues and touches of jazz, funk and reggae and heaps of improvisation Live At St. Andrews is sure to be a winner. Highly recommended.
